October-November,
Bulb planting time
When we talk about bulbs, let me intro
duce three concepts:
1. Small flowering bulbs, such as: Crocus,
grape hyacinth, Scillas, winter acon
ites, Chionodoxas and Lily of the
valley.
2. Large flowering bulbs: Tulips, Hya
cinth, Daffodils, Iris.
3. Summer flowing bulbsGladiolus,
Dahlia's, Lillys and Montbretias.
When planting bulbs, for spring flower
ing, we have to consider the garden ar
rangement at springtime. Clumps of bulbs
are very effective, rather than single bulbs
in a row Small flowering bulbs should be
planted in drifts of 50 or more to be ef
fective. They also make an effective border
in front of tulips or daffodils.
Tulips and Narcissus species will grow in
partial shade but will not produce as large
flowers nor bloom as early as when grown
in full sun. However, they may tend to
bloom over a longer period of time in par
tial shade and the blossoms will last longer.
When planted ,all bulbs require good
drainage. Add 1-2 inches of sand under
the bulb, place small flowering bulbs to 4
inches deep and large flowering bulbs 6-7
inches. In April and May, spring flowering
bulbs have their greatest water require
ments, since this is the period from pre-
bloom to, post-bloom. Those that have to
be irrigated should remember that. Two
weeks after the plants have bloomed, no
additional water should be needed as the
plants mature rapidly after this time.
Good sized bulbs for planting are at
least lj/a inches in diameter. Store in a
cool place before setting. After Tulips have
completed (lowering, do not cut down the
foliage. Allow it to die naturally. The
foliage manufactures food to store in the
bulb for next season. After blooming the
flower stalks should be clipped and not
allowed to ripen seed. This is especially
true of Tulips and Daffodils. Bulbs of spring
flowering types may be lifted and allowed
to dry in the shade after the foliage ripens
and browns. Remove the soil from the
roots and store in a cool dry place until
planting time in the fall. It may be inter
esting to note that the Tulip and the
Agave from which we make the sisal fiber
belong to the same botanical Lily family:
Amaryllidaceae.

Weten doet eten
Op International Day in het Interna
tional Institute in Los Angeles was zoals U
maan-pasteitjes precies dezelfde vulling heb
Here goes:
MANCHA MANTELES
3 tablespoons butter
3 tablespoons olive oil
1 lb. lean boneless pork, cut in 1 -in
pieces
2 2/4- to 3-lb. chickens, cut up
seasoned and floured

1 green pepper, sliced
1 6-oz. can tomato paste
cup unblanched almonds, toasted
1 tablespoon sesame seed, toasted
J/4 cup sugar
1 J/2 teaspoons salt
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
3 whole cloves
1 bay leaf
2 cups cubed raw sweet potato
1 cup fresh pineapple pieces
1 cup diced apple
Heat half the butter and half the olive oil
in a large skillet. Add pork and brown well
remove to a large sauce pot. Set aside.
Brown chicken evenly in skillet adding
the remaining butter and olive oil as needed.
Transfer chicken to the sauce pot.
Add onion and green pepper to drippings
in skillet and cook about 5 min., stirring
occasionally. Remove from heat and spoon
into blender container. Add tomato paste,
nuts, and sesame seedblend until smooth.
Return mixture to skillet, stir in 4 cups
hot water and next six ingredients. Bring to
boiling; simmer, uncovered, about 15 min.
Pour the sauce over chicken and pork in
sauce pot. Bring to boiling and simmer, cov
ered, about 30 min. Add the sweet potato
