W-\ A with brainsahd tangaMingin Some common shrubs and Iris for in the fall I choose this subject at this time because almost all woody- deciduous plants are easily transplanted after the first freeze in the fall. Exceptions are; Magnolia, Poplar and Birch. The value of ornamental trees depends on its natural beauty of form and attractive ness of leaves, flowers and fruits. Only plants adapted to the conditions in which they grow should be selected. Use care in selecting and placing shrubs so they will not grow too large for the location where planted. Low growing shrubs should be used under windows and in front of porches; taller kinds should be planted at corners and between windowsThere are many evergreen and decidu ous flowering shrubs that can be mixed into a planting that adds color during certain sea sons of the year. In higher elevations, the Forsynthia, Spirea and Beauty bush are the first to bloom in the spring. During the fall and winter seasons, the berries of the Pyracanthas, Cotoneaster and the foliage of Nandinas and Barberries are at their best. Now a few words about Iri(J) Iris likes a warm climate. It is a native of Asia Minor, they multiply q[uickly and take very little care. The rhyzome is a long tuberous-like root and is easily transplanted. They make a good background planting or fill in an unin teresting corner. They should be divided and reset every two or three years, otherwise they become too crowded. Most of them break apart easily. If not, cut them apart with a sharp knife. Cut back the tops to 8-10 inches. Plant the rhyzome so there is about an inch of soil over the top^ Set the rhyzome in a saddle Cv with the roots pointing down. Cover with soil and give them a good drink. E. van Voorthuizen
