could serve the nation as a better citizen.
Also S.L.F. Catalani, now co-director of
Tong-Tong, was once a forminable leader of
the IEV.
By far the greatest man in the IEV was
Frederik Hermanus ("Dick") de Hoog. He
was born on June 16th, 1881 out of a marriage
of a Dutch father and an Indonesian mother.
His father died early and tragic fate of all
fatherless children without any ties to the
homeland (Holland) Seemed to be the normal
future of this boy. But Dick was a strong-
willed boy. Though the very small pension
of his mother (with four other children) did
not provide the means for a broad education,
Dick studied hard at school and after ele
mentary school was admitted to the HBS
(High School) in Surabaya. He finished this
school as one of the brightest students on
his 16th year, but no college education was
possible for the poor young man, who wont
to work at once as a clerk at the Governmen
tal Rail ways (SS). In this career he climbed
up quickly, also winning fame as a sportsman
(gcalgetter in the Surabaya soccer club (HBS).
When he got a chance to have a short furlough
in Holland, he at once took this chance to
study at Leyden for graduated civil servant.
Again he finished this study with fop honours
and being back in the Indies his way was
open to much higher positions. Little Brother
(Kleine Boeng) was on his way to become a
Big Brother (Grote Boeng).
But then the difference between him and
other social climbers became clear. Dick did
not forget the plight so many of the poor
friends of his early schooldays were still in.
He became a member of the IEV and in a very
short time climbed up to the position of Gen
eral Chairman and head-representative for the
IEV in the People's Council. Here Dick de
Hoog proved to be a sharp politician and a
statesman of first order. During his leader
ship the very most was achieved for the Indo
group. In the many conflicts with Indonesi
ans as well as Dutch he proved to be a firm
opponent but a good friend as well.
The Dutch Government acknowledged his
many merits with two royal decorations:
Officer of the Order of Oranje—Nassau in
1928 and Knight of the Order of the Nether
lands Lion in 1935. He worked too hard
however and like Karei Zaalberg (who died
54 years old) he suddenly fell ill and died
on March 1st, 1939, 58 years old. His
death sent a shock through whole Indonesia.
He was mourned by all Indo's, Dutch and
Indonesians alike.

It happened about October-November, 1945
during the bloody pelopor days. The gates
were open at the prison camp in Bandoeng
and I was coming down the Dago weg when
I noticed a young Indonesian who put his bi
cycle across te road and exhibiting a flashy
klewang out of its sheath.
I did not quite know what to do; it was
during the hot afternoon hours and I did not
see anybody near. I was unarmed and on
foot, I did not want to turn around or run
for it. When we were at hearing distance,
he said:
"Hi, have you got a match? I got some
English cigarettes but no lighter!"

Natuurlijk wordt er vaak genoeg rijst ge
geten en ofschoon Marijke's smaak niet
alles kan appreciëren, is ze toch dol op
bepaalde gerechten.
"When are you going to make 'some more?"
vraagt ze moeder op een dag.
"Some more what?"
"Just some more," zegt Marijke. "You
know the chicken in a brown sauce and
onions and spices?"
Natuurlijk bedoelt ze "smoor kip".
Een nieuwe variatie op dat mopje in de Ned.
Tong-Tong van die Hollandse dame die het
tegen de kokki heeft over "ajam soemoer".
