We probably all remember the Indonesian
way to propagate plants by use of an "tjankok-
kan". Well, here in America the same thing is
called "air layering" and it goes by using
one year old branches; older branches may
form roots but take longer. Make the layer
about 15 inches from the tip of the branch.
Remove the leaves in the area of the layering
operation. Begin air layering by wounding the
branch. Make a shallow slanting cut about two
inches long in the branch (you may use a root
ing stimulant to dust into the cut) and place
a small sliver of wood in the cut to keep it
open. Next, dampen a fistsize ball of sphagnum
moss and squeeze it as tightly as possible to
remove excess water. Wrap the sphagnum
around the branch, covering the wound.
Then, cover the ball of moss with plastic
sheeting - an 8 by 10 inch sheet is big enough.
Wrap the plastic around the moss-covered-
branch so the sheet overlaps itself. Finally,
twist the ends of the plastic sheeting around
the branch ond fasten them securely with plas
tic-electrical tape.
Watch for collection of rainwater in the
plastic package. If water seeps in the ends
of the package, punch a small hole in the
plastic to allow the water to drain out. Leave
the air layer undisturbed for one full growing
season. Branches that are layered in the Spr
ing should root by the following spring. Bran
ches layered in the fall should root by the sec
ond spring. When roots have formed, they
usually are visible through the plastic covering.
In spring after the roots have formed, re
move the plastic and cut off the branch below
the roots. Set the new plants in the nursery
bed.

Dit tjankokken vind ik een typisch voor
beeld van gardening with brains, er is kennis
van zaken, geduld en beleid bij nodig. Ik wil
niet zeggen dat alle vrouwen die eigenschap
pen missen, maar ik geloof toch wel dat wij
het meer moeten habben van onze tangan din-
gin. Dus: takje afsnijden, in de grond met een
schietgebedje. En dan maar iedere dag kijken
of "het nog leeft". Want zolang het tikje niet
verdord is zouden er worteltjes aan kunnen
zitten.
Het lukt niet altijd natuurlijk. Sommige
planten moeten worden getjankokt. Zou ie
mand mij kunnen vertellen bij welke planten,
struiken, heesters ik beslist niet aan moet ko
men met mijn tangan dingin en die ik dus door
tjangkokkan moet vermenigvuldigen?
