ADVERTENTIE I want to personally thank you - Triangle Tours - for making all the arrangements of our trip. For us it was a "dream come true" and alles was bovenverwachting 1 Gwendolyn, our guide was fantastic. We had a perfect group and we all cared that the other person found what they came for too. We had so much in common, most of us were born there, j and many of us had been in a "Japans kamp" and we all wanted to find our roots. You know, we liked each other and that is so rare on a bus trip. Gwendolyn deserves praise We first went to Bogor to find Kota Paris. We wanted to find the house, and we were told to go and see "Opa Willem", a white-haired elderly man, who spoke perfect Dutch. We were invited i in and served drinks and yes he knew what we were looking for and took us directy to the spot. We went straight upstairs to the bedroom and opened the front window and sure enough there j was the little bridge over the Kali, remembered so well, because people always used to wave at j us from there, and I remembered the Rumah Sakit farther away, and there it was!! Memories came running back! A similar effort was made trying to find mothers grave. I had received a letter van de Stichting Oorlogsgraven, stating that all graves were moved to Menteng Poelu, a beautiful, well kept cemetary. Erg indrukwekkend Finally, after all these years, we found where mother was buried. Now Albert Kruyff- mijn broer wanted to go to "Het 9e batallion"; een jongenskamp. We hired a car, while the rest of the group had a tour through Bandung, and we set of to Cimahi. The barracks were indeed there and were well kept. So A1 went to het "wachthuisje" and explained that he wanted to see the place. He was afterall an Anak Indonesia and came back to see the past. Although we were told, the Military would never let us in, in no time flat we got permission to go where-ever we wanted and take pictures of everything. We were invited to the canteen for drinks too. After a few hours we parted with hugs and kisses! and the promise that we would send them the pictures, which we did of course. What a fun day that was One more experience I have to tell you about. This was with the whole group present. Tom Neeve and also the van Schendels, had memories in Semarang. De van Schendels grootvader was de Regent van Semarang and they wanted to find that house; we found that the house had been destroyed and in its place was a gasstation. We went to the St.Elizabeth Hospital, the place we were born. It was still used as such and it was in beautiful condition. Then 1 remembered as a girl of 5 that Babu Siemie and I walked to this hospital to see Al. who j was there with difteria, so the house we grew up in could not be far away. But the streetnames 1 were all different. An older man approached Gwen and told her to follow him. We went uphill (heuvelterein) and sure enough, there was the school, still in use and the principal and some teachers came out for pictures. With a picture of our house in hand, we kept on going and all of the sudden around the corner THERE WAS THE HOUSE.The roof was still the same, entrance, windows. The property itself was in a terrible state, but 1 felt chills just being there, it was exiting! That house was still there, being at least 80 years old. Gijs Kooiman was the last one to find his roots. That was near Jember, the plantation he went back to with his parents, after the war. He gave us, through the intercom, the very interesting history of the area. The bus stopped at een wachthuisje. Gijs had a list of names of the people j that had worked for his Dad and the guard recognized the name of his father, of course long dead. So, we got permission to drive all the way to the plantation. The spanning brought out many tears. The administrator invited Gijs and his wife in for a tour and as we were standing there talking, een elderly man rushed over to Gijs and said "Don't remember me, 1 am so and so and 1 was the one who always got your horse ready when you wanted to go out for a ride'I He was 76 years old and probably the only left from those days. From here we went to Bali for a well deserved rest. We went through so many emotions. Bali is a beautiful place with so much Art. dancing, woodcarvings, paintings and shopping. People everywhere were so friendly and were always smiling. One of the highlights was definitely the childrens choir, "Ujo's Angklung Music School" Beautiful!! All the hotels, with the exception of New Mirah in Bogor, were beautiful and the hotel in Malang, which was de vroegere Soos and especially hotel Puri Asri in Magelang stood out, it was PARADISE! and we stayed 3 days! Nogmaals Kees, hartelijk dank voor het verzorgen van deze onvergetelijke trip through Java, Bali and S'pore. The bus of Jackal Tours (Bandung) had Airco, was spacious and comfortable and our driver performed miracles. Great!! It was a dream come true after 56 years; we needed to go back, to relive the past, and it was good this way. Met vriendelijk groeten from our house to yours. CcxvLa. oac\ ja.ck
