What do they know,
what do we know?
It is a fact that the American student in
History-class, is not being taught, but maybe
a little, about the Dutch-East-Indies and
what further came from it. We shouldn't
say that Americans lack general knowledge
cr that their education is poor. It is not
exaggerated. It is good.
What do we know about Lithuanians,
Hawaiians, Chinese, etc? How would a com
mon American possibly know a thing about
"Dutch-Indonesians" or "Indo," when the
common Dutchman, or even we, ourselves
don't know a thing about it?
We can't help it. No encyclopedia men
tions us, there are no books about us, no
written history or heritage. And most of us
don't care. We leave it just as it is.
Here's the story of a 'lil' ol' American
lady." A commoner. I'd say. And she cares.
When I first talked to her, she noticed my
accent. My last name didn't tell her a thing.
My children confused her even more, sine?
one is very brown, having rather sharp fea
tures, the oher dark blond, hazeleyed. Not
denying her Soendanese great-grandmother,
she enjoys the possession of the typical "Indo
nose" or "idoeng pesek."
At last the lady popped the question:
"Where are you folks from anyway?"
I explained to the best of my ability and
knowledge our descent. I told her what I've
been telling others who asked the same ques
tion.
Two or three days later she confessed her
ignorance.
"I didn't know a thing about what you
told me the other day and I looked it up
in my encyclopedia. I read all about the
Dutch-East-Indies and what happened after
the war. The independence and all that. I
read about Indonesia too. Why, there's
nothing in it about your people! I didn't
come across "Dutch-Indonesians." But from
what you told me. I can pretty well guess
what happened to your group, where you
come from and what most of you must have
felt, leaving your native country. I guess,
I understand why you came to American
and why you must prefer California. You're
quite an interesting group, you know. 1
wonder why your story has never been writ
ten, I would have wanted to read it." So
did I.
It is heartwarming, that this "all Amer
ican lady," who is not a BIG SOMEBODY
and who actually has nothing to do with us,
should be so interested, so curious, so eager.
She took the trouble to look into her en
cyclopedia.
I'll still have to meet the first Dutchman,
who will tell me the same. Undoubtedly,
there are a few who think this way. And
why not? After all, we partly hail from
them. It's fair, that there SHOULD be a
few.
But: whom of our own people will take
pains to advise an encyclopedia? Who is
curious enough to read "Navorser" in Tong-
Tong? Who is eager enough to know more
about himself? Who is proud of the few
little books, which tell about the common

Op onze Selamatan op 20 October zullen
een aantal bijzondere gasten aanwezig zijn
uit het officiële, economische en culturele
leven, die grote belangstelling hebben voor
wat er in onze groep omgaat. Wij zijn er
van overtuigd dat het een avond zal zijn, die
zi| niet gauw rullen vergeten, en waar nut
tige vriendschappen worden aangeknoopt
met de Amerikaanse maatschappij, waarin
wij snel omhoog willen klimmen. Hier liggen
kansen voor U open, waar U veel nut van
kunt hebben. Laat ons een oude Indische
traditie hoog houden en perfecte gastheren
(-vrouwen) zijn!
Maud heeft een zoon!
Voor ieder die ons na het artikeltje
over Mand Vetter (A.T.T. no. 2) op
belde om te vragen of de baby er al was:
Maud kreeg op 24 Sept. j.l. een zoontje:

Maandagnacht beboren en Donderdag
moest de auto de service in. dus zat Maud
weer achter het stuur. En haar eten-
leveren gaat allang weer zijn gewone gan-
getje

Of is 10 beter?
Kennis is macht
Wie uit het Oosten komt is opgegroeid met
de mystiek en de wetenschap dat er naast
het gewone leven "meer" bestaat. Dat
"meer" uitte zich in de vaak fantastische
verhalen over goena-goena, zwarte kunst,
witte, kunst. Men hoorde veel, men onder
vond echter ook dingen die ons er toe brach
ten wat dieper naar de oorsprong ervan tc
zoeken. Maar wie van ons heeft zich dc
moeite genomen of de kans gehad er eer-
wetenschappelijke studie van te maken?
In Hollywood staat een school waar die
kennis is op te doen door iedereen die er
serieus naar streeft. De naam van die school
is: Institute of Parapsychology.
Het instituut is net in October met een
nieuwe cursus begonnen en het lesrooster
omvat Psychic Science, Philosophy of Soul
Realisation, Mental Science, Spiritual Phi-
losophv (alle Yoga's) en dan de Introduc
tory Classes. Er wordt van 8 tot 9.45 's
avonds lesgegeven
Het indelen van de cursus in verschillende
categorieën maakt dat men zelf kan bepalen
voor welk onderdeel van de wetenschap men
het meeste interesse heeft en men dus zelf
zijn cursus kan uitzoeken. In vele plaatsen
hier in Southern California zijn Yoga-scho-
le. Deze scholen onderwijzen echter voor
het grootste deel alleen Hatha Yoga, de
wetenschap die zich bezig houdt met het
welzijn van het stoffelijk lichaam. Hoewel
een belangrijke branche, is het toch maar
een onderdeel van de gehele wetenschap.
De studie die hierboven bedoeld wordt, is
géén kinderspel. Liet is dus niet aan te
raden naar het Instituut te stappen met het
idee van: "Kom, laat me eens kijken wat
daar te doen is," want dat is tijd en geld
verknoeien
Wie echter oprecht naar meer kennis
Zoekt, zal in de studie bij het Institute of
Parapsychology de oplossing vinden voor
alle vragen die men zich vroeger stelde over
de wonderlijke dingen die buiten ons leven
gebeuren

Who knows these exist?
Who is prying in old writings for more
knowledge, who is searching for more mater
ial?
Who is DOING something, if anything at
all, about this?
To all these questions, there's just one
answer: far and far too few.
It's a pity, for we should do something,
we must.
We owe it to our forebears, our children,
the country we live in and most of all to
ourselves.
So, we can't afford to wait any longer.
Let's do it NOW.
