We asked SEVERAL Americans for their
opinion. NO ONE expects us to write per
fect English. EVERYONE applauded us for
our initiative. They think it only logical
that we have difficulties with our new
languagebut are sure that by going on this
way we will improve fast. Furthermore they
are surprised that some might think Ameri
cans look down upon or laugh about bad
English, as many millions of immigrants
have their own difficulties with English. As
one said: it is a NATIONAL difficulty.
I think that being afraid of what others
might think is an old sore of Dutch- Indo
nesians in communities, where bad Dutch
was considered a sign of inferiority or at
least that either the perfect had to be pro
duced or nothing at all.
I am looking at the struggle of my chil
dren in school to master this new language,
without being ashamed, without feeling set
back because the perfect was not established
at once. Why would we wait many years
or work endlessly at one perfect article for
Tong-Tong and produce nothing at all at
last? Only by stubborn DOING we will get
on, for only by DOING we will know our
faults and improve. Be never afraid for
knocks on your fingers, deserved or not. I
got them, when young (and I am getting
them still), but one thing is sure: I got
somewhere!
So do not mind the snorts and sneers not
the frowned eyebrows, readers of Tong-
Tong, go ahead! I myself write bad Eng
lish too in this magazine (and I know it),
though I am working with my dictionary
all the time, and I accept invitations for
speeches. When people laugh, it is all right
with me. Only now I know and feel what
poor Nono from Petodjo or Tjoh from the
"oedik" had to stand up against with his
Indonesian speaking mother and his Dutch
speaking teacher. He was (and always has
been) my friend, and I admired him for
his courage. Let me admire you for your
courage. Stand up, speak and write Engish,
you'll get somewhere!

Sometimes we get down to our last pair
of nvlons. Did you know that you could
take your stockings off, wash them and rinse
them, shake them very hard while holding
them about midway where the knee area is,
then all you have to do is put them between
a bath towel and rub as if you were polish

In de vorige A.T.T. sprak Fanny Hoyei

Henk de Boer. Of Fanny werd verkeerd
ingelicht of hij verstond de persoon ver
keerd, want niet Henk de Boer maar

RUNEL) verzorgde het eten. En wie reeds
kennis gemaakt heeft met het eten (op
bestelling) van mevrouw Benjamins, be
grijpt meteen ook hoe ze daar op die
bruiloft genoten hebben. Ere wie ere toe

Een tip voor huisvrouwen die altijd
njengen onder het uien schillen: Zet je
plank met de uien op de voorste burner van
je gasstel, laat de achterste branden en
snij er lustig op los. Op de een of andere
manier schijnen de vlammen de lucht te
