Evenals in Holland groeit The American Tong-Tongwél langzaammaar positief.
Dat is een goed teken: in de natuur groeien waardeloze of slechts één oogst leverende bomen
het snelst - en zijn weer snel "voorbij." De mangga, de nangkade waringin groeien
langzaammaar zijn voor vele generaties van groot nut.
Het zal lang duren of inderdaad wordt het abonnee-aantal bereikt dat ons in staat'
stelt op breed terrein voor ieders voordeel te werken, a door een systeem waarbij goedkoop
kan worden ingekocht en doorverkocht aan abonnees van allerlei nuttige zaken in het
huishouden9 b. door een systeem waarbij doeltreffend en gratis kan worden gewerkt aan
steun in nood
Geen enkele groep, waar ter wereld ook, en van welke kleur of ras ook, hoeft afhankelijk
te zijn of te schuilen onder andermans identiteit, als er in een groep maar zelfbewustheid
en trots is. En vastbesloten elkaar te helpen. Niet toegeven aan onderlinge afgunst en
ruzies, de grote lijnen blijven volgen, geduld en volharding hebben, dat brengt onze Tong-
Tong-groep vooruit.

something you'll never have to say. O, sure
there have been times that I gritted my
teeth, even went as far as to kick the set,
on those days when I had looked forward to
watching a certain program and the darn
thing wouldn't work just then. But gritting
teeth isn't any good for your teeth and kick
ing the set might ruin it completely. So I'll
say something like: "O, the rothing
won't work again and I'll miss NAKED

ing (I always frown, when I am angry with
dead things. No use scolding) I'll seek re
fuge in my book case. Seek and Thou shalt
find! By the time I am nearing chapter II
the frown is gone. Of course not everybody
likes reading. Many people are too impatient
to sit quiet for a long time. But certanily,
there must be something you are interested
in. Then read about them. It does not mat
ter what, first make it a habit to WANT to
pick up a book. To know more about his
tory or sociology, for instance, you don't
need to bury yourself in tough history books
or sociological studies. There are a great
many excellent novels, written by the most
clever writers of our time. Novels with a
historical or sociological purpose. Facts and
figures, however, which make study books
dull and tough, will be worked up in the
experiences of the novel's principal char
acter (s).
This is only an example of course. Now
if you don't like long stories, your encyclo
pedia will answer all the questions you may
have about a certain subject in a consid
erable short time. Right to the point. You'll
know the essential things, without having to
go through tough study material. With me
reading has become so much of a habit that,
when no books are available right away, or

My father would always be very disturbed
when we said that we "had nothing to do,
that we were bored." Especially in Holland,
when after dinner, the schoolwork had been
done and it was still too early to go to bed.
You could not go out for a stroll (as in
Indonesia) because of the almost ever bad
weather. You could not walk over to the
television. In those days television was not
as common in the homes as it is today (Al
though the programs haven't improved
much, I am sorry to say).
"Nonsense," dad would say, "pick up a
book and read. Read. Read!" So it became
a habit in our family that we read after
dinner. In those days I became the passion
ate reader I am today. Now, in America
you can divide your evenings between read
ing and television. I love television. There
is so much good entertainment in every field.
As so many others I have "my own shows,"
two or three a night, definitely not more.
Reading, however, is still my first love, it
always will be. The first thing I ask myself
before settling down for a quiet evening:
"what is there to read?" And you know,
the answer to that question is seldom nega
tive. Then the TV guide is advised. What
shows are there, at what time are they on.
If the shows are interesting enough to my
taste, I'll have to divide my time between
screen and books. Sometimes I watch tele
vision all night. But if I don't care for any
show at all, there are still my books, even
our encyclopedia set, for the mood for read
ing stories isn't always there.
And that is the difference between "after-
dinner-TV" and after-dinner-reading."
"I don't know what to do, our set isn't
working!" You might have heard this
phrase, you might even have said it your
self. If you are a habitual reader, this is

jaardag. Hoewel nu (a.s.) staatsburger*
van een ander land, houden wij toch
haar gedachtenis in ere en bieden haar
onze oprechte gelukwensen aan.
The American Tong-Tong
Wederom is een Amerikaanse univer
siteit abonnee geworden van "The Amer
ican Tong-Tong", nu de Cornell University,
Ithaca, N. Y. Én voor een vol jaar. Na een
"Selamat datang" aan de nieuwe abonnee
en de hoop uitsprekend dat we de Univer
siteit in alle eenvoud goed kunnen dienen,
tekenen we tcoh nog het volgende aan:
1. De merkwaardige situatie is onstaan
dat de Indo die het hardst "Yank" wil
worden en "alles afbreken" wil, en zijn
zoon naar de universiteit zendt om "super-
Yank" te worden, deze zoon in het ontwik-
kelingsvlak brengt, dat juist wél interesse
heeft voor Tong-Tong en ons verleden! De
kans om die zoon dus op die universiteit nog
beter vooruit te helpen, wordt nu dus-
afgesneden
2. Blijkbaar zitten in ons "schaamtevol
en waardeloos" bestaan dus toch wél hoge
waarden, die we moeten leren zien en ont
wikkelen.
3. Op hoger niveau bestaat aandacht
voor onze groep en we zouden dom zijn als
we daar geen nuttig gebruik van maakten.
De kern is hier gelegd van vriendschappen,
die waardevol voor ons kunnen zijn.
4. We horen het "logische" tegenargu
ment al: de universiteit kan het betalen; ik
niet. Wie geen kwartje in de week kan
losmaken van zijn huishoudbudget om een
gezins en een groepsbelang op lange termijn
op te bouwen, kan doodgewoon niet met
geld omgaan en heeft geen toekomstbesef.

Betalingen van onze abonnees komen
goed binnen. Nieuwe abonnees worden
ingeschreven. Wij beseffen dat voor
velen zo'n betaling van 5 of 10 "een
hele hap" is. Dat men het nochtans
gaarne opbrengt voor een serieus doel
met grote beloften voor de toekomst,
in plaats van nog een hapje of fuif
meer, bewijst dat onze groep ernstiger
wordt, constructiever, bewuster. Met
dank dus voor Uw correcte abonnee
schap, prijzen wij ons gelukkig met
de verzekerdheid van Uw steun en
vriendschap. Samen "teroes poekoe-
lend" zullen wij het ver brengen.
