1. Gardenias like part shade in our warm
climate. After planting, mulch with peat or

age often causes chlorisis as well as lack of
certain essential elements, such as magnesi
um and iron in the soil.
2. BUD DROP is caused by too-dry soil,
overwatering or poor drainage, lack of light
or by sudden changes in temperature. This
is usually temporary and can be corrected
fairly easily by studying your conditions.
Gardenias are beset by many insect pests.
White flies on the undersides of the leaves
produce an unhealthy condition of growth
by feeding on the plant. The plants are also
attacked by mealybugs and scale insects. But

minutes of spray work.
3. BE SURE that your gardenia gets plen
ty of water during the summer. In average
soils a thorough soaking once a week is
enough during the hot weather. If you are
doubtful, test the soil. If it is dry, water

quent overhead sprinklings. Evening is the
best time. Morning sprinklings and a hot
sun will burn the plant.
Start feeding gardenias just after they
have finished blooming. These feedings,
three of them, should be spaced about 30
to 40 days apart. Discontinue feeding after
September. YVhen feeding be sure the plant
has been watered the day before.
Moisture-laden soil makes it possible for
the plant nutrients to be picked up by the
roots fast. Dry roots will absorb too fast
just like a person gets indigestion from over
eating.

heeft voor onze groep? Zou een rubriek
over b.v. gramofoonplaten niet meer trek

Meer mensen dan je denkt (en ik
aanvankelijk dacht). Om die reden zal het
dus zijn nut wel hebben. Ik begrijp dat een
belangrijk percentage van elke volksgroep
weinig interesse heeft voor geschiedenis,
laat staan begrip van de hoge vormende
waarde. Maar voor het kleinere, intelli
gentere deel is dus deze rubriek bestemd.
Voor liefhebbers van gramofoonplaten zijn
er in tal van andere bladen rubrieken
genoeg. Maar nergens anders ter wereld
wordt een poging gedaan om de historische
background van de Dutch-Indonesians beter
te leren kennen. Zoals je ziet, is de rubriek
dus ook geschreven in het Engels. Omdat
veel Amerikaanse lezers (o.a. de Universi
teiten) graag wat meer over onze groep
willen weten. Aangezien de doorsnee Indi
schman er weinig van weet en er graag meer
van weten wil, wordt deze rubriek gepubli
ceerd ten behoeve van serieuze Amerikaanse
en Indische lezers.
