INSECTS AND CONTROL,
SPRAYS AND DUSTS
At this time of the year insects are plenti
ful and the markets are flooded with all
kinds of bugkillers.
There is not enough time now and space
to discuss the lifecycles of the most common
plant pests or the action and effects of mod
ern insecticides, but a few words about it
are in order.
When you buy bugkillers, be sure you al
ways read the label very carefully. House
hold sprays and insect bombs from the gro
cery store are usually taboo for use on plants.
Always buy your materials for gardenpests
only. For small gardens use a household
sprayer. A typical sprayer consists of a tank
holding anywhere to three quarts of liquid.
Air pressure from the plunger pump breaks
up the liquid into droplets. These sprayers
usually are made of tin and may cost as little
as 49 cents and up.
Always clean the equipment thoroughly
after use. Spray materials are very corrosive
and will clog up channels.
Many multipurpose sprays are now on the
market, in watersoluble form or as wettable
powders. These powders usually contain
D D.T. or a related Chlorinated Hydocarbon
or Malathion, which is a very effective non
toxic organic phosphate. These two are very
effective compounds against most any garden
insects. A home gardener always gets a great
deal of practical information from the label
of the insecticide he buys. Make very sure
that you always read and follow the direc
tions for mixing and use on the label. When
applying the material, give good coverage
and do not forget the underside of the leaves
on a plant.
The the old saying: "If a little is good,
more of it is beter" does not hold true in
the use of insecticides. The use of excessive
amounts is wasteful, expensive and often in
jurious to plants, animals and soil.
Proper timing is important also; if applied
too early, insecticides may be dissipated be
fore the pest is present or in a susceptible
condition. If applied too late, you may kill
all insects but they already have caused the
injury. Always keep your garden clean. A
lot of pests find shelter or overwinter under
boards, trash and garden refuse.
When you are through, store the insecti
cide in a safe place.
Aside from insects we also have to deal
with bacterial, virus and fungus diseases. A
most common fungus is Mildew. Mildew is
evidenced by white or grayish powdery spots
on foliage. This fungus growth is controlled
by dusting with Sulphur alone or combined
with materials to control other pests. Start
in June and repeat twice a month through
out the season.

Agricultural County Extension Agent who is
usually located in the County Courthouse in
any town and get from him the practical
information for specific problems and con
ditions in his area.

Een dezer dagen kwam ik in contact met
uw blad. Het is ontroerend hoe groot de
liefde voor het mooie land soms weergegeven
wordt. Ondanks dat ik er niet geboren ben
maar er veel lief en leed meegemaakt hebt,
gaat mijn hart soms sterk uit naar de nooit ge
noeg geprezen schoonheid van het landschap
van vulkanen en palmen. In krijgsgevangen
schap maakte ik enige gedachten op rijm
in verband waarmede ik U nu schrijf. Ik
zou het zeer op prijs stellen indien het vol
gt ride een plaatsje mag krijgen in Tong
Tong.
DE PALMBOOM
Lokkend staat hij aan de kusten
Van dit rijke zonneland,
Hooggetooid en zonder ruste
Wuivend in de zonnebrand.
Blij te saam als stoere helden,

Hoe de verhouding tot Indonesië ook ge
weest moge zijn de afgelopen jaren, er
bestaat geloof ik geen Indisch-gast die niet
voor altijd een kostbare herinnering aan dit
rijke land in zijn hart heeft gesloten.
Blind zijn voor de natuur was onmogelijk,
want ons leven daar was nauw verweven met
de natuur. Juist in krijgsgevangenschap zijn
de mooiste gedichten, opstellen, tekeningen
ontstaan, want in die momenten van "af
stand" werd de herinnering aan het bezit
het duidelijkst. Dit gedichtje van "Totok"
is er een sprekend bewijs van.
