.J 3Phe ^Tmcrtcan Tijd: 8 p.m. got under way. On December 25, 1912, he es tablished the Indische Partij. Douwes Dekker offered a solution for all who were excluded from the Dutch citizenship. They could con sider the Indies as their definite fatherland and all (Indo's, Chinese, Indonesians) could consider themselves as "Indiërs" the citizens of this fatherland. Prominent co-leaders of the Indische Partij were Tjipto Mangoenkoe- soemo and Raden Soewardi Soerianingrat. There were at once 5000 members, most of them in Semarang. The Dutch Government considered the Indische Partij revolutionary and dangerous. Legalization of the statutes was not granted and when the Indische Partij continued to exist anyway the Government acted swiftly: the organization was declared illegal; Douwes Dekker was deported to Timor. Tjipto ond Soewardi were deported to resp. Banda and Bangkö. This happened in 1913. The greater part of the members success fully moved over to the Vereniging Insulinde. Also Soewardi and Tjipto, who returned to Java in 1918, became members of this Party. Soon new thoughts developed in the Vereniging Insulinde, which name was al tered into Nationaal-lndische Partij (N.I.P.) with the Indonesian name of Sarekat Hindia, 1919. This Party was admitted to the People's Council (Volksraad) with three rep resentatives: J.J.E. Teeuwen, P.F. Dahler and Tjipto Mangoenkoesoemo. So about 1918 we find in the Dutch East Indies a number of Indonesian and Chinese organizations and one "European-lndonesion organization but no Dutch organizations, strongly behind the Government. Something had to be done, the way was paved for the establishment of the Indo-Euro pean League.
