The subject of fertilizers is very
elaborate. In short there are two
kinds to distinguish; organic, such
as manure, and commercial fertili
zers.
Oanure should be turned under se
veral months before the garden is
to be planted.
This is to give bacteria an oppor
tunity to break down the manure in
to elements that can be absorbed by
the plant roots. Manures decay more
rapidly wher. the soil is warm and
moist. Manure, containing much
straw may retaid this action. The
best time to aroiy is after each
crop is harvested. a:.c the best re
sults may be obtained from applying
small amounts of manure supplemen
ting with commercial fertilizer.
For some crops such as cucumbers,
melons, tomatoes and pumpkins, rot
ted manure is often applied in
hills by mixing it with the soil in
the bottom of the hole and covering
it with soil.
For a general description on the
value of commercial fertilizer use
the following rules: Nitrogen will
favour the vegative growth of all
plants. Applications should be used
particularly on lawns, lettuce, ce
lery, hedges, etc.
Phosporus is needed for rootgrowth
and seedformation. So emphasize thi
element on carrots, melons, pump
kins, etc. Always use complete fer
tilizers with all three numbers
listed on the container: Thus:
6-10-h- means 6 Nitrogen, 10
Phosporus and h Potassium, always
in that order.
Een lezer vroeg ons waarom wij in
dit blad zoveel aandacht besteden
aan tuinieren, waar veel mensen on
getwijfeld helemaal niet in geïnte
resseerd zijn.
Die veronderstelling klopt niet
erg. Wij hebben ervaren dat onder
Tong -Tong-lezers juist ongewoon
veel aandacht is voor gardening.
Tuinieren is een serieuzer vora
van bestaan om vele redenen. Het
is per se niet een kwestie van
geld alleen dat in de betere buur
ten veel meer goed onderhouden
tuinen zijn dan in armeluisbuur-
ten'.1 Wie een beetje verstand heef
van tuinieren, merkt al gauw dat
