the soil and water with a fine
spray. In sowing fine seed such as
Petunia's and Snapdragons, mix the
seed with fine sand and sow in
rows spaced one-half inch apart.
Do not cover fine seed. Larger seed
may be sown directly on the soil
surface and lightly covered with
vermiculite and carefully watered.
Flats may be enclosed in plastic
cleaner bags to maintain uniform
moisture for germination. As soon
as seedlings appear, slit the plas-
•tic and gradually increase the
openings in the plastic. In a few
days remove the bag and shift the
seedlings into full sunlight. If
the seedlings do not receive suf
ficient light they will become
leggy and weak.

Chrysantemums
Chrysantemums can bring a variety
of bold colors to your garden from
mid-July until killing frost. Usu
ally chrysantemums are planted in
masses or in small groups. Almost
every gardensetting is suitable
for them. Because of their long
lasting flowers, mums are also
used in indoor arrangements and
are a popular gift from florist
shops. Although chrysantemums in
pots from florists may be trans
planted to the home garden, most
of these plants do not survive
the first winter.
Hardy varieties produce under
ground shoots or stolons, which
enable these mums to persist from
year to year without replanting.
Non-hardy varieties do not persist
from year to year. They produce
few or no stolons; they are win
terkilled by freezing of the soil;
or "they bloom so late in the sea
son that the flowers are killed
by frost. For these reasons, com
mercial florists grow non-hardy
varieties.
Chrysantemums become crowded
quickly. Divide them or take cut
tings every two years. After the
last killing frost in the spring
lift plants out of the soil from
the roots. You will find that se
veral smaller plants - each with
his own. roots - surround the old
plant. Separate them carefully.
Plant the small ones outdoors in
newly prepared soil. Discard the
old plants.
