Tjalie was Charlie Chap-
S lin, a famous movie star.
As a child I always
thought that the little
tramp was the real Tjalie,
and was surprised to find that he
didn't look like that at all.
Chaplin's movie, Modern Times, was
- like many of the others he made -
a kind of social commentary, in this
case on life on the assembly line in
factories (remember Henry
Ford?). He showed

and often a message at the same time
My parents talked a lot
about Tjalie Tjaplin and
how funny he was.
He was instantly recog
nizable as the Litte
Tramp with his mous
tache, cane, derby hat
and funny walk in
shoes that were too
