Tot dusver was alles redelijk goed verlo
pen voor DD. Niets wees op een duide
lijke relatie met de Duitse regering en
niets wees erop dat hij zijn Indiase vrien
den bedroog. Tot advocaat Roche vroeg
wat er precies gebeurd was in
Amsterdam. Het bleek dat DD de
Duitse vice-consul in Amsterdam drie
maal onünoet had en zeshonderd pond
van hem had ontvangen en dat tezamen
met Pillai alle plannen voor DD's reis
besproken waren.
In een eerdere discussie met Preston had
DD toegegeven dathe was hunting his
oivn game'. Toen advocaat Roche hier
verder op in ging, resulteerde dit in een,
overigens overbodige, uitbarsting van
DD.
Douwes I lekker: Look here, put your
question quite direct: do you want to
know whether 1 was grafting in this spe
cial conspiracy case? Is that what you
mean?
Mr. Roche: That is just exactly what I
want to find out. In other words, your
connection with these matters to which
you have testified was brought out solely
and exclusively because of your desire to
make money out of them: Is that cor
rect?
Answer. Douwes Dekker: Yes.
Q. And for no other desire and with no
other intention?
A. No other intention.
Q. And when you talked to Pillai and
when you talked to these other men you
apparently talked sincerely to them, but
in your own mind you attempted to
graft?
A. I was playing a comedy.
Q. The Court: Camouflaging, I suppo
se?
A. Douwes Dekker: Camouflaging.
Q. Mr. Roche: You say you were playing
a comedy, but the result of the comedy
so far as you were concerned was to get
all of the money you could get out of
them?
A. Douwes Dekker: Yes.
A. Yes.
Q. And you were acting your part of it
for money, it is true?
A. Yes.
Q. Did you expect to get this money out
of the Hindus, or did you expect to get
it out of the Germans?
Mr. Roche: Now one minute: That is
objected to, may it please your Honor,
as calling for his conclusion.
The Court: No, I don't think so. I think
that question is all right.
Answer. Douwes Dekker: I told counsel
for the defense just now that I had
enough indications for my own convic
tion that the German government was
behind it, and I knew that the money
which came from the Indian Committee
came from the German government,
and I had no objection to graft on the
German government.
Question. Mr. Preston: When you
answered counsel that you were getting
money from the Hindus, you meant you
were getting it from the Germans?
Answer. I was quite convinced that it
was German money.
Mr. Preston: That is all.
Voor de getuige was dit geen goed einde.
De San Francisco Chronicle was er vlug bij
een nieuwe term toe te voegen aan die
van political exile' en ''soldier of fortune'.
DD stond nu ook bekend als een
international scoundrel.
Misschien dat een puntje van de sluier
over dit deel van DD's getuigenis opge
licht kan worden door DD's eigen onbe
hagen over zijn activiteiten in
1914-1915. In zijn toneelstuk Superieur
laat DD zijn alter ego Dick Grol zeggen
dat hij 'moe' is: 'Moe van de wereld,
moe van de karakterloosheid, moe van
deceptie, desillusie, moe van het bedrog,
moe van zichzelf.'
Rectil icatie:
De foto die bij de vorige aflevering werd
afgebeeld, is in 1918 aan boord van de
Rumphius genomen, toen E.FE. Douwes
Dekker terugkeerde uit zijn ballingschap in
Singapore. Bij de foto stond echter dat
Douwes Dekker op het punt stond naar
Brits-Indië te vertrekken en dat klopt niet.
Douwes Dekker is zelfs nooit in Brits-Indië
geweest!

al helemaal niet van DD's zijde.
Question. Mr. Preston: Mr. Dekker, did
you receive 1,000, or some other sum?
Answer. Douwes Dekker: I received at
Hongkong about 1.000 gold by wire.
Q. Let me put this question to you: You
carried out the plot in order to get more
money, did you?
