Indonesian Islam and the temptations of radicalism And roe Feillard Rémy Madinier Indonesian Islam and the temptations of radicalism Andrée Feillard and Rémy Madinier Translated by Wong Wee Long cited as a model of harmonious co habitation between different religions, the most populous Muslim country in the world until recently occupied a special place in the Western imagination. Indonesia, home to a peaceful version of Islam, offered a reassur ing counter-model to a rowdy and accusa tory Arab Islam. Since 1999, however, confrontations between Christians and Muslims in the Moluccas, excesses of vigi- lantism in Sulawesi, and especially the Bali and Jakarta bombings have shattered these simplistic stereotypes. For many terrorism experts - often self-proclaimed - Indonesia's mutation confirmed the hackneyed thesis that equated obscurantism with Islam, and saw violent outbreaks as an inevitable con sequence. The End of Innocence is far re moved from the hollow analyses underlying this essentialist thesis. The book positions the evolution of Indonesian Islam in the broader context of the recent history of the archipelago, and provides a rigorous analy sis of the origins and causes of the 'radical temptation,' deciphering its simplistic ideol ogy and showing how it has been nourished by political manipulation. The authors, both historians specializing in Indonesian Islam, describe the hold of religious extremism as well as the strong resistance it has provoked in a country that has quickly become one of the key spots in the upheavals occurring throughout the Muslim world. Businesspeople and professionals had profited from President Suharto's rapid economic success, and were allegedly eager to not only to show off their new wealth, but to boost democratization processes as well. They and their families were the vanguard of a category of Jakartans who regarded themselves boldly as the 'normal, modern, educated middle class' of Indonesia - against the background of a profound and state-induced depoliticization. Apart from fostering a new consumer culture, the new middle class was at the root of the expan sion of the conurbation Jabotabek, housing hundreds of thousands of newly arrived middle-class members. Meanwhile, a new and huge gap between rich and poor became conspicuously visible in Jakarta. During the 1990s, the increasing political instability of the New Order government and the Asian monetary crisis led to the dramatic resigna tion of President Suharto in May 1998. Being Indonesian 1950-1965 Jennifer Lindsay and Maya Liem (eds) This volume brings together new scholar ship by Indonesian and non-Indonesian scholars on Indonesia's cultural history from 1950-1965. During the new nation's first decade and a half, Indonesia's links with the world and its sense of nationhood were vigorously negotiated on the cultural front. Indonesia used cultural networks of the time, including those of the Cold War, to announce itself on the world stage. International links, post-colonial aspirati ons and nationalistic fervour interacted to produce a thriving cultural and intellectual life at home. Essays discuss the exchange of artists, intellectuals, writing and ideas between Indonesia and various countries.
