De heer B. W. de Rijk heeft (zie TT van
1 juni 1975) de vraag gesteld of die
wrekende prinses, die uit de zee van
Pelabuhan Ratu opstijgt, mooi of lelijk
zou zijn. Psychologisch bekeken is elke
figuur, die zich wil wreken niet mooi
te noemen. Hoe mooi een prinses er
physiek moge uitzien, zodra de wraak-
gedachte zich van haar meester maakt,
zal normaal wel de weerspiegeling van
die wraak zich aftekenen in de gehele
verschijning.
Persoonlijk heb ik Ratu Kidul nog niet
in haar physieke of astrale verschij
ningsvorm gezien. Anderen, die dat
voorrecht wel deelachtig mochten wor
den, vertelden, dat de Koningin van de
Segara Kidul, de Indische Oceaan,
wonderschoon is. Misschien kan AEP,
die schreef over "Ontmoeting met Njai
Loro Kidul" in Tong Tong hierover wat
meer vertellen.
Hieronder moge volgen "The Legend
of Dewi Loro Kidul", zoals dat te lezen
is in de mooie folder van het Samudra
Beach Hotel.
Gemakshalve in de originele Engelse
tekst.
"When West Java was still a Kingdom,
it was known as the great Kingdom of
Pajajaran. Pajajaran was ruled by the
wise Prabu Siliwangi, whose queen
was beautiful as well as kind. One day
the queen gave birth to a healthy baby
girl, named Kadita, who soon grew to
a lovely princess whose beauty, ho
nesty and kindness enchanted every
one throughout the Kingdom. The King
so loved the princess, that it made one
of the King's concubines envious, as
she thought that the lovely princess
would one day inherit the Kingdom's
throne.
Filled with evil, she conspired with a
powerful black magician - who made
the princess and her mother turn ugly.
Ashamed now of their condition, the
queen and her daughter left the Palace.
They walked for days through thick
forests and wild valleys, hiding from
people and avoiding being seen. The
long and tiring ordeal made the queen
weaker. Then she fell ill and died. Now
princess Kadita continued her uncer
tain journey southwards alone. All
misery and all the sufferings made her
thinner and more ugly than ever. But
gathering all her power, she kept on
walking and stumbling, sometimes
dropping down to sob deploring her fa
te. Then finally she stopped. She could
not move her legs any further. She felt
dizzy. She seemed to see everything
turn and fall on her. And soon
poor princess fell unconscious on the
ground. When she regained conscious
ness, she slowly - but distinctively
heard the sound of waves striking a-
gainst a rocky beach. The princess
struggled to get up, and saw before
her eyes the shore of the southern
beach of the great Indonesian Ocean -
with its powerful and mighty, waves
curling towards its rocky beach and
breaking against it.
The princess watched in deep admira
tion, while the gentle breeze gave her
strength to reach and sit on a big rock
near the sea, now called Karang Hawu.
Nowadays tourists often stop to rest
at the spot, on their way to hot spring
Cipanas. All of a sudden, princess
Kadita heard a mysterious whisper
commanding her to jump into the sea
if she wished to regain her beauty.
Aware that there was no other way,
she jumped in. The minute she touched
the water, she was once again TRANS
FORMED TO HER BEAUTY. But how
shocking!The princess soon rea
lized she was unable to get out of the
sea. Since then, she reigns the Ocean
as Dewi Loro Kidul - the Goddess of
the Sea.
As a tradition fishermen of Pelabuhan
Ratu hold their annual ceremony on
April 6th, to ask Dewi Loro Kidul for
happiness, safety and prosperity."
